Bob Kessler – The pressure was overwhelming, and I did everything I could to meet my father’s expectations. My father was an executive and director for Honeywell and was adamant that his children would work there too.
After graduating from college, I immediately started working for Honeywell. I wanted to uphold my father’s reputation in the company and represent myself as professionally as he did. I learned many valuable lessons while working in the marketing and customer service department.
My time at Honeywell lasted 10 years before I realized I needed a change. I was doing what my father wanted rather than finding my own way. I knew several people in real estate, including my uncle. They made real estate look exciting.
I have always had a deep interest in architecture and thought real estate might be a great fit. I decided to get my REALTORS® license, but I was apprehensive initially. Leaving behind my stable career for a job with no regular paycheck or benefits felt like a risk, but I knew I had to try.
Finally, I decided to take the leap and commit to real estate full time. It was the best decision I could have made. My father fully supported the transition and was proud to see me finding my path in life.
My uncle was a significant inspiration during this transitional phase. I saw how happy he was pursuing his interests and enjoying life to the fullest, and I decided to do the same. After all these years, I feel incredibly fortunate for how far I have come and all I have achieved by following my dreams and taking a chance.
Jose Kosar – It was one of the hardest conversations I ever had with my family. I dreaded telling them I wanted to work outside the family business. My parents immigrated to the United States from Argentina, knowing no English and having little to their name. They opened retail stores and restaurants, and I worked at the businesses from an early age. I remember the customers enjoying my help and sometimes even waiting longer so they could get assistance from me. I was so proud to be part of a respected family, but as I got older, I wanted to seek out new opportunities.
A career opportunity became available, and I was worried about what my parents would think if I chose to take it. My parents created a strong family legacy I was proud of; I didn’t want them to feel disrespected if I chose a different path in life. When I finally spoke with them, they said, “You should try something different. We are always going to be here for you.” It was a relief to feel supported and know that my parents wanted the best for me no matter what.
Once I had my parent’s blessing, I went to college and worked in high-level customer service positions for 25 years. Helping people has always been my true calling. From there, I became a REALTOR® and feel I have truly found my place in the world. It has been rewarding to watch my son, Alex, go through the same journey of finding his way. Today, he is in the military, and I am very proud of how much he has achieved.
